About forty (40) persons from the St. Joseph Constituency are now better equipped to start or improve their small businesses after partaking in a workshop.
The workshop, which was held by the Ministry of Commerce, Enterprise and Small Business Development, ran for two days. A certificate ceremony for participants was hosted on Thursday 15 June 2017.
The main purpose was to equip participants with critical knowledge, skills and capabilities necessary to start and manage their small businesses using best management practices, taking the necessary steps at formalization and learning to spot opportunities that the government of Dominica has facilitated.
“We tried to look at small business and see how we can make small business big business because we believe that big businesses are big because they were once small and they implemented good strategies so that they could grow big,” Facilitator McNamara Joseph explained.
Among the topics discussed were S.W.O.T Analysis, marketing and promotion, pricing, budgeting and how can we manage our finances and record keeping.
Joseph reported that the training was successful and is confident that over the next few years St. Joseph will be home to successful businesses.
Quoting a Chinese proverb, Joseph said to participants, “Strategy without tactics is the slowest route towards victory. Tactics without strategy is a noise before defeat.”
Meanwhile, Troy James who completed the two days’ workshop said before he was “confused and lagging behind” regarding managing his business but has acquired quite a bit of knowledge.
“I’ve learned business strategies, record keeping, steps of setting up my business and now I know my strengths and weaknesses in how to manage my business,” he explained.
James added that this information is very beneficial as “for the past years I have been trying hard to know how to invest my money to further enhance my business, but after listening to Mr. Joseph I think I am further equipped to move forward”.
He assured the facilitator that with what was taught, “Believe you me, I am taking my business to the next level”.
