For many people having a large and spacious bedroom is the ideal living option. However due to the amount of space available for building, the cost of construction and affordability, it is not always possible, resulting in rooms that are smaller than desired. Fortunately small bedrooms can appear larger than they are with some simple design techniques. Consider using the following tips to make your compact bedroom feel spacious:

1) Paint the room using different shades of one color (white, off-white, and beige) to give the room an expanding feeling. If you prefer having a variety of colors go light. Consider using whites mixed with other soft, pale tones. This will make your bedroom feel fresh, airy and spacious.

2) Patterns can play a significant role in making your compact bedroom appear larger by distracting your senses from the tight corners. Having a bold paint effect or designed wallpaper can impact the room’s visual size.

3) Including large art pieces or collections of art pieces can make a room actually feel larger with their commanding scale. Choose art and frames with a lot of white and pale colors, that way the pieces feel sizable but not aggressive. This may not apply if the space is extremely small.

4) The main issue of having a small room is limited storage. Compact bedrooms often feel cluttered because there really isn’t anywhere to secure belongings. Make use of spaces that are usually left unused, like under the bed. A bed with drawers underneath and floor to ceiling closets can do the trick.

5) Adding mirrors to any room is the easiest way to make a room appear larger because they reflect both natural and artificial light which expands the sense of space. Having a custom wall-to-wall mirror will create the most dramatic impact, but a simple hanging mirror(s) can also get the job done. Hanging a mirror to reflect a window gives the illusion of another window in the room, thus causing the bedroom to look bigger and brighter (according to the weather).

6) When choosing furniture for your compact bedroom downsizing is the best option. Purchase items that can fit into the room without occupying too much space. Furniture with less puffy cushioning and simpler armrest make a better fit for small rooms. For example, nesting tables (a set of small tables ranging in size so they fit one on top another) are great for small bedrooms.
